Lathrup Village to participate in National Day of Service and COVID-19 Memorial
Citywide food drive in honor of Dr. King will culminate on Monday, Jan. 18th
COVID-19 Memorial and Illumination, Tuesday, January 19, 2021, at 5:30 pm
Lathrup Village, MI — Friday, Jan. 8, 2021 —Lathrup Village’s month-long food drive will culminate on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 18, 2021, in conjunction with a National Day of Service. Additionally, Lathrup Village will participate in the National COVID-19 Memorial taking place Tuesday, January 19, 2021, at 5:30 PM by lighting the Lathrup Village City Hall building and adjacent structures in Municipal Park.
Citywide Food Drive
Dr. King lived a life of service with a commitment to those in need. “We recognize there is a tremendous need within our community at this time. Lathrup Village is prepared to heed the call. We have united in a citywide food drive benefiting Lighthouse Michigan, which offers emergency shelter and food pantries to those in need,” noted Christopher Clough who is coordinating these events.
The Lathrup Village Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a friendly competition between sections of the city. Residents receive weekly updates indicating upcoming themes and flash challenges.
To participate in the citywide food drive, residents may:
- Drop off donations during business hours to the Community Room of Lathrup Village City Hall, located at 27400 Southfield Road, Lathrup Village, 48076 until Monday, January 18.
- Drop off donations to business collection sites:
- Michigan First Credit Union at 27000 Evergreen Road, Lathrup Village
- Glamour Salon at 28801 Southfield Road, Lathrup Village
- Participate in the next “Fill the Truck” porch collection date on Saturday, January 16, 2021.
National COVID-19 Memorial
On Tuesday, January 19, 2021, Lathrup Village will join in honoring those killed by the coronavirus pandemic by lighting the City Hall building and adjacent structures in Municipal Park at 27400 Southfield Rd, Lathrup Village, MI 48076. This is in partnership with the 59th Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) and cities and towns across the nation to illuminate buildings and for churches to ring bells at 5:30 pm, in a national moment of unity and remembrance. In Washington, DC, the ceremony will also feature lighting around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. It will be the first-ever lighting around the Reflecting Pool to memorialize American lives lost. Local residents are also invited to light their homes and churches are asked to ring their bells at 5:30 PM as part of this national memorial.
