The City of Lathrup Village is pleased to recognize Michigan’s continued investment in urban forestry and community tree canopy growth. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), DTE Energy Foundation, and ReLeaf Michigan announced that 27 communities and organizations across the state will share $98,400 ($4,000 of which is dedicated to Lathrup Village) in grant funding and technical assistance to support tree planting and strengthen local green infrastructure.
The statewide initiative will support the planting of more than 900 trees in public spaces, including streets, parks, and community gathering areas, during fall 2026 and spring 2027. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the partnership among the DNR, DTE Energy Foundation, and ReLeaf Michigan to support Michigan’s urban and community forests.
The City extends its sincere thanks to the Lathrup Village Tree Committee for its work in securing grant funding and advancing the City's efforts to maintain and grow its urban tree canopy. The Committee's dedication helps support the City's long-term commitment to environmental sustainability, neighborhood character, and the preservation of its community forest.
“Maintaining and expanding our tree canopy is an important investment in the long-term character and sustainability of Lathrup Village,” said Community & Economic Development/DDA Director Janet Bloom. “We appreciate the Tree Committee's work in pursuing grant opportunities and helping the City protect and strengthen our urban forest for current residents and future generations.”
Trees provide important benefits to the community, including shade, improved environmental quality, stormwater management, and enhanced public spaces. Continued investment in the urban forest helps preserve these benefits while supporting a healthy, resilient community.
The DNR’s Urban and Community Forestry Program provides municipalities and other organizations with financial assistance, technical support, and educational resources to help manage and strengthen community forests.
